The American Alliance of Museums recently featured The American Story, the National Archives Museum’s new permanent exhibition, as part of its Center for the Future of Museums series exploring innovative applications of artificial intelligence in museums.
Developed in partnership with the National Archives and National Archives Foundation, with exhibition design by C&G Partners and media and technology by Cortina Productions, The American Story uses machine learning to help visitors discover connections within the vast holdings of the National Archives.
The personalized experience begins as visitors select topics and types of records that interest them. As they explore the galleries, the system draws from two million digitized records to recommend documents and photographs connected to those interests. Visitors can continue shaping their profile through their interactions, creating an evolving journey through more than 250 years of American history.
The technology also extends the experience beyond the Museum. Records visitors explore are saved to a digital backpack, allowing them to revisit, share, and continue exploring their discoveries after they leave.
As Patrick Madden, Chief Executive Officer of the National Archives Foundation, writes for AAM, the goal was to use technology to make the extraordinary scale and range of the Archives more accessible while keeping original records at the heart of the visitor experience.
